Himeji Castle, registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, is a beautiful castle known as “Shirasagi-jō” (White Egret Castle). In December 1993, Himeji Castle was designated as Japan’s first UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, together with Hōryū-ji Temple in Nara. Affectionately known as “Shirasagi-jō” (White Egret Castle) for its elegant appearance, said to resemble a white egret spreading its wings, Himeji Castle is distinguished by its white plastered walls and its complex keep structure. The main keep—five stories above ground with six floors and one basement level—is connected by corridors to three smaller keeps on the east, west, and northwest sides. The main keep of Himeji Castle that we see today was built in 1609, and even after more than 400 years, it continues to retain its beautiful appearance.

Identity verification

The Himeji City Museum of Literature features modern architecture designed by Tadao Ando, offering beautiful views of Himeji Castle.

The permanent exhibition introduces the history related to Himeji Castle and the words of literary figures connected to the Harima region through videos and graphic displays.

Visitors can also enjoy strolling through the traditional Japanese architecture “Bōkeitei,” built in the Taisho period, as well as the surrounding garden. Here, literature, history, and architecture come together to create a unique cultural space.

This exhibition presents a comprehensive retrospective of manga artist Fumiyo Kouno—renowned as the original creator of the animated film In This Corner of the World—featuring original manga pages and illustrations spanning from her teenage years to her latest works, picture-book originals, storyboards, and personal belongings. The exhibition traces her long-standing pursuit of the possibilities of manga.

Kokoen Garden is an authentic Japanese garden developed on the site of the former West Residence of Himeji Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Covering approximately 10,000 tsubo (about 3.3 hectares), the spacious grounds feature nine distinct gardens, each with its own unique atmosphere.

Centered around a traditional pond-strolling garden, Kokoen includes a tea garden, pine garden, flower garden, and more, captivating visitors with beautiful seasonal scenery throughout the year. Flowing streams, waterfalls, and tranquil ponds are carefully arranged within the garden, and with the white walls of Himeji Castle as a backdrop, the setting evokes the atmosphere of the Edo period.

Visitors can also enjoy matcha green tea at the tea house, offering a relaxing opportunity to experience the elegance of Japanese culture during their sightseeing. The xID app is a digital ID application that, when linked with your My Number Card, enables easier identity verification, authentication, and electronic signatures.

⚪ Persons with disabilities and their caregivers should not purchase tickets in advance. Please present your disability certificate or equivalent document at the on-site ticket counter (copies or images are not acceptable).  

⚪ If you are 18 years old or older, please select “Adult (ages 18+)”.  

⚪ If you are 18 years old or older and have a Donguri Card, please do not purchase this ticket. Instead, present your Donguri Card at the on-site ticket counter.  

⚪ For children, please select either:

・“Child (Under 18 years old)”

A child is a person under 18 years old (including a person who is under the age of 18 on the day they turn 18 and until March 31 following that day).
