“From Japan’s Treasure to the World’s Treasure — Over 400 Years of History” In December 1993, Himeji Castle was designated as Japan’s first UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, together with Hōryū-ji Temple in Nara. Affectionately known as “Shirasagi-jō” (White Egret Castle) for its elegant appearance, said to resemble a white egret spreading its wings, Himeji Castle is distinguished by its white plastered walls and its complex keep structure. The main keep—five stories above ground with six floors and one basement level—is connected by corridors to three smaller keeps on the east, west, and northwest sides.
